How to Ace Abstract Photography

Abstract photography is considered to be the most beautiful form of photography as the same photograph can hold different meanings for different people. It can change the most mundane everyday objects into fascinating forms that are created purely from the imagination and creativity of the photographer. Many photographers are driven by the limitless nature of abstract photography as this art form has no set rules or guidelines, allowing them to explore different angles, frames, and other aspects.

Abstract photography is of various types – abstract landscape photography, abstract portrait photography, abstract nature photography and abstract macro photography. While each one of these will require special handling, here are some abstract photography tips that will help you click better abstract photos:

  1. Add Color & Texture: Playing on the elements of color and texture in your abstract photo can change the way a viewer looks at it. For example, different colors can signify different things and can evoke a variety of emotions. Texture makes a photograph more real and helps tell a story more effectively. You can also emphasize on depth, shape, and form to anchor the eye to certain specific points in an image.
  2. Go Macro: Some of the best abstract photos have been taken by the photographer moving closer to the object being photographed. While this can be done by zooming in using a regular zoom lens, the better approach is to use a good Macro Lens or switch to the Macro mode on your camera. Abstract macro photography can be used to create images that will leave your viewer puzzled yet intrigued.
  3. Implement the Arts of Minimalism and Subtraction: Minimalism, a branch of abstract art that evolved post World War 2, works on using as little as possible to create the most impact. This form also uses concepts like negative space and cropping the photograph to keep the viewer mesmerized and wondering what lies beyond the frame. Subtraction works on a similar basis, with the photographer removing elements from the frame to add focus to the ones that make for the core subject of the photo.
  4. Experiment with Different Photography Styles & Elements: Abstract photography is all about trial and error using different combinations of elements like shape, form, lighting, angles, framing, etc. to find the right picture. Since abstract photography doesn’t confine you to any rules, you should play with these elements to see how each one affects your frame.
  5. Capture Motion: Most skilled photographers would shudder at the sight of a blurred photograph, but if done right, it can make for a stunning abstract photo. Work with your camera in a series of motions to understand the impact of each on your photograph. A shutter speed of 1/10th of a second or slower is ideal for capturing motion successfully. To avoid overexposure, you can use a lower ISO level combined with a tighter aperture.

Using these simple yet highly effective tips will help you click better photos.
